ari neufeld (penticton)http://www.arineufeld.com
I live in the hills of the Okanagan... I make rhythm with my feet... scoops and stomps on a little wooden box I found in my grandfathers tool shed. I make melodies with my fingers and tongue and teeth and lips. I play the guitar. I travel. |
david roy parsons (vancouver)http://davidroyparsons.ca/
Artists are often like icebergs- you see only a fraction of what there is. You see the art but not what makes it. You see the artist but not the years and experience that produce them. David Roy Parsons- (the Roy is to avoid confusion with the various other David Parsons- you’d be surprised…) is a singer, a songwriter and an all round interesting human being. Born in 1971 and mainly raised in Ottawa, he is now getting ready to depart after a dozen years in Vancouver to dwell in Nelson. With four CDs to his credit, he is not only one of the more interesting writers on the current Vancouver neo-folk songwriting scene but also a man with an uncommon story to tell; a story that is only abstractly revealed in his songs. |
Maiya Robbie (PENTICTON)www.maiya.bandcamp.com
myspace.com/maiyarobbie The most common remark heard after listening to Maiya Robbie is that one has been “transported”. Her ability lies in being able to pierce through the surface, to the reality of things, to a place of poetic authenticity. Like a storm about to break alongside half a sky filled with sunshine, Maiya’s music is a textural, vivid experience. Influenced by the sensibilities of folk and contemporary poets like Gwendolyn McEwen, as well as touched with a healthy measure of indie ingenuity, Ms. Robbie has the finesse to not only talk to the heart of a matter, but to take it in both hands and deliver it into the lap of her listeners. Several years ago (2007), Maiya joined Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long with legendary spoken word performer Shane Koyczan. Recently, the band released their third album, Remembrance Year. Maiya is also a music teacher at Maeve Lily School of Music and is starting an early childhood music program locally. |
Sober Becky (nelson)"Sober Becky" is a musical group comprised of guitar player/singer Becky Russell and sometimes Megan Kienas (on drums)
Becky grew up in Vanderhoof, BC. She currently lives in Nelson. Her songs are folky acoustic punk rock and are often political. In addition to some of the best (and worst) open mics sets ever played, sober becky (and usually megan) has been the opening act for Ford Pier, the Invasives, Impeders of Progress, Passenger Action, Jeff Andrew, the Rebel Spell, and almost SNFU except that Chipig had pnemonia and so it never happened. |
Toupey and Chris (PENTICTON)Rising from the ashes of fiery experience on the Calgary folk scene, Toupey and Chris are a duo who blend poetic lyrics with roots, rock and funk. They have played across Alberta and parts of BC, including the Island Mountain Folk Fest in Fernie and the South Country Fair in Ft. McLeod Alberta. Toupey's original song "Red Rover" was the lead-off track to a highly successful series of modern protest songs on a project entitled "Hold Your Ground".

He has played the last 3 years in a row at the Princeton Traditional Music Festival, and just moved to Penticton. She has fronted bands in the U.S.A., Mexico, and Canada, as well as performed as a solo musician. She has performed her original songs at a variety of venues including festivals, clubs, cafés, bars, weddings, funerals, parties, as well as on T.V. (Santa Barbara Public Television), radio (WWOZ New Orleans), and as an avid busker and around-the-campfire singer/songwriter. Currently teamed up with the Miscreants (Darren Filipenko, Lee Holland, and Ryan Schick), these folks really enjoy playing together and are glad to be a part of Folkanagan. |
Nadine Kellman (edmonton)http://www.nadinekellman.com/
Nadine Kellman has been making her musical mark in Western Canada. Landing regular gigs at festivals and venues across British Columbia and Alberta, she’s busier than ever. Kellman is a tunesmith, crafting songs of sorted love tails into soulful daydreams. Her blues-tinged folk is an avenue for her trademark witty retorts and open letter songwriting. It’s not just Kellman’s original songs that have people coming back for more. Kellman masters a spectrum of covers ranging from Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me Not to Come” to Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone.” Backing Kellman on her musical journey are The Black Wonders, an Edmonton super group of sorts, with Breezy Brian Gregg on lead guitar. Backing her is Jon Forsyth on drums and Melissa Walker on bass. The Alberta-based band intends to capture their musical escapades when they record a new album this fall at Big Dreamer Sound in Edmonton’s quaint Rossdale neighbourhood. This new record follows their 2011 release of their debut EP “Up from the Basement.” The band has received media exposure on CBC Radio, CKUA and CJSR. Testimonials: “Nadine Kellman and the Black Wonders rock – rich, soulful vocals, tight grooves and easygoing charm.” – Scott Cook “Nadine Kellman has a calm and sparkling depth of presence in her music – a presence that is reserved for natural and enduring artists.”– Bill Bourne, multiple Canadian Juno Award winner |

dave soroka (grand forks)http://www.davesoroka.com/
I live in Grand Forks, British Columbia, right down on the US border. I've been writing songs since 1969 when I got my first guitar at 15. I'm an Army brat, but I call Grand Forks my home town. When I was young I worked as a section man on the Canadian Pacific Railway, pulled boards on the green chain for Pope And Talbot, loaded boxcars and drove a boom boat for MacMillan Bloedel on Vancouver Island, fought forest fires...but for the most part I've been self-employed all my adult life, doing whatever it takes... I have three kids and three grandkids so far. I didn’t raise my own kids so I can't brag about how they've all turned out, but they're all beautiful. To date I've written about a thousand songs. I've recorded a number of CDs. As far as my goals for my art: I just want the listener to feel some of what I feel. |

EXPRESSION COLLECTIVE (vernon)http://www.expression.bc.ca/
Knowledge of the Arts does not belong only to the nation from which it came, it belongs to us all. Expression Collective believes in the influence that music has towards creating cultural awareness. Music and the arts are a gateway to knowing ourselves; a window to the soul. To know ourselves is why music is so important in the world today. This is the intention the group plays with. The expression collective performs indigenous songs in various languages that represent the people of the world. They combine these traditional songs with upbeat rhythms and three part harmonies. As well, they write and perform original music. The Collective is based in BC's Okanagan. They travel the province, performing on outdoor stages and at festivals in the summertime. In the winter they perform at house concerts, carnivals and in schools for BC artists in residency programs. They are a group who truly shares the greater goal of re-connecting us all to the world we live in together. Each song brings new musical roots to experience, as well as the cultural origins from which the songs were born. expression.bandcamp.com Najala - Barefoot Caravan |
chris horne (maple ridge)http://www.reverbnation.com/chrishorne
Chris Horne is the son of a working class family whom as a product of the 1970’s, was at one time a young, angry punk. Now wiser (older,) a father of two, a husband of one, and a victim of modern day society (has a job); Chris finds it in his spare time to express his inner most emotions through musical creation. As a best friend to many, a great listener to all, and partner in crime to few he is always ready for adventure. Be careful what you say to him you may be the topic of his next song. His style is diverse. Whether it an acoustic punk rock song about love and relationships, a blues shuffle about a drunk-in night in the city, or a jazz song about forbidden love you never know what to expect when he hits the stage. Chris is mostly a private person living a quiet life in Maple Ridge BC and doesn’t play a lot of shows but if he says he’s coming, he’s coming so don’t miss this opportunity to check him out. |
EDZIEOO (vancouver)EDZIEOO is a queer Aboriginal halfbreed songwriter, as well as a sultry, mesmerizing, magical lion creature with a heart in her throat. Her sound is best described as a mixture of indie folk rock, and jazz with a dash of cabaret old time country. Her songs are inspired by life, the human condition, heartbreak and letting go. You can expect music to sway to, lyrics to relate with, and a voice that will creep into your dreams.

Doug Koyama (quesnel)http://koyama.bc.ca/
Once a cook, courier, graphic designer and festival monitor tech from small-town BC, Doug Koyama now launches into his third summer as a touring musician at the age of 53 years. The evolution of Koyama’s music has been constant and joyful. Personal revelations inform a deeper connection to source, making his music mesmerizing, evocative and emotionally charged. The Summer of 2012 saw Koyama perform at seven BC music festivals including Robson Valley Music Fest, ArtsWells Festival of All Things Art, and a main-stage performance at Smithers’ Midsummer festival. Doug has experienced two years of life-changing kindness, beauty and generosity on the festival trail. Paying it forward, he continues to put those things back in through his music, making ever-growing ripples in the hot indie music scene. “I believe that music is the ancient wisdom that dwells in us when we are born and that the details of life slowly suppress it as we grow,” Doug says, adding, “When we reconnect with that internal symphony we reawaken ideas of self, connection and joy.” |
